GitHub Profile Picture Size

The GitHub profile picture size limit is under 1 MB and smaller than 3000 × 3000 pixels, in PNG, JPG or GIF, and GitHub Docs recommend about 500 × 500 pixels for the best rendering. Here are the full rules, why uploads fail, and how to make a developer headshot that fits them.

One photo • 2 variations per generation • Packs from $9

GitHub Profile Picture Size Requirements

  • File type: PNG, JPG or GIF.
  • File size: less than 1 MB.
  • Dimensions: smaller than 3000 × 3000 pixels.
  • Recommended: about 500 × 500 pixels for the best quality rendering.

These figures are from GitHub Docs (linked in Sources below). GitHub can change them, so check the docs if an upload is rejected.

Why Your Upload Might Fail

The 1 MB limit is the one people hit most. A high-resolution PNG headshot, including the files you download from our generator, can be larger than 1 MB. Resize it to around 500 × 500 pixels or save it as a JPG before uploading, and it will usually come in well under the limit.

Very large images are also rejected if either side is 3000 pixels or more, so crop or scale down photos straight from a phone or camera.

What Shows if You Don't Upload a Photo

GitHub gives every new account a randomly generated pattern called an identicon. If you use Gravatar and your Gravatar image is linked to the email on your GitHub account, GitHub shows that image instead.

A real photo isn't required on GitHub, but many developers add one so that people recognise them across pull requests, issues, talks and job applications. If you also use the photo on LinkedIn, keep in mind that LinkedIn asks for your likeness, so use a headshot that looks like you.

Recommended Looks in the Generator

After you upload your photo, pick these options in the generator. Each generation gives you 2 variations, and regenerating the same look is free.

Background: Gradient

Outfit: Casual (Crew Neck Tee), Navy

A crew-neck on a gradient matches how most developers present themselves.

Background: Modern Corporate Office

Outfit: Semi-Formal (Sweater), Grey

A sweater if you also use the photo for job applications.

GitHub Profile Picture Size: Questions and Answers

About 500 × 500 pixels, as GitHub Docs recommend. The file must be PNG, JPG or GIF, under 1 MB and smaller than 3000 × 3000 pixels.
The file is probably over 1 MB or at least 3000 pixels on one side. Resize the image to around 500 × 500 pixels or save it as a JPG, then upload it again.
Yes, and it helps people recognise you. LinkedIn's minimum is 400 × 400 pixels, so a 500 × 500 image works on both; see our LinkedIn profile picture size guide for its rules.
Most developers use a casual look. In the generator, the Casual outfit with a crew-neck or v-neck tee fits GitHub well; Semi-Formal suits a photo you also use for job applications.
